Our Commitment

We believe that access to healthcare technology information should not be limited by disability. Symphonix Health strives to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines provide the internationally recognised standard for making web content more accessible to people with disabilities, including visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive impairments.

Measures We Have Taken

Accessibility is an ongoing effort, not a one-time project. We have implemented the following measures across our website:

Semantic HTML — We use proper heading hierarchy, landmark regions, and semantic elements to ensure assistive technologies can accurately interpret page structure.
ARIA Labels — Interactive elements, icons, and navigation controls include descriptive ARIA attributes so screen readers can communicate their purpose clearly.
Keyboard Navigation — All interactive elements are reachable and operable using keyboard alone. Focus order follows a logical reading sequence.
Focus States — Visible focus indicators are present on all interactive elements, ensuring keyboard users always know where they are on the page.
Colour Contrast — Text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA minimum contrast ratios. We test with automated tools and manual review to ensure readability across our dark theme.
Reduced Motion — We respect the prefers-reduced-motion media query. When a user has indicated a preference for reduced motion in their operating system settings, animations and transitions are minimised or disabled.
Descriptive Link Text — Links are written to be meaningful out of context, avoiding generic phrases where possible.
Image Alternatives — SVG diagrams and decorative images include appropriate alt text or are marked as decorative with aria-hidden="true".
Responsive Design — Content reflows gracefully at all viewport widths and supports text resizing up to 200% without loss of functionality.

Responsive Design as a Legal and Ethical Requirement

Responsive design is not optional — it is a legal requirement under WCAG 2.2 and the UK Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018. It is mandated by the NHS Service Standard and the NHS Design System. It is an SEO necessity under Google's mobile-first indexing policy. And it is the economically rational choice — a single responsive codebase costs roughly half as much to maintain as separate desktop and mobile implementations.

With over 60% of web traffic originating from mobile devices, and NHS patients overwhelmingly using phones to access health information, building non-responsive applications means losing the majority of your users. Every page on symphonix-health.com is tested at three breakpoints:

960px — Tablet breakpoint. Grids collapse to single column, hamburger navigation appears, all touch targets are at least 44×44px.
600px — Mobile breakpoint. Full-width stacked buttons, reduced section padding, vertically stacked call-to-action groups.
375px — Small phone breakpoint. Tighter spacing, scaled headings, compact navigation bar.

We also respect prefers-color-scheme for automatic light/dark mode switching, and provide a manual theme toggle accessible on every page at every viewport size.

Known Limitations

While we work to ensure comprehensive accessibility, we are aware of the following areas where improvements are in progress:

Some interactive SVG diagrams (such as the architecture and orchestration demos) may not convey their full information to screen readers. We are working on text-based alternatives for these visualisations.
Older archived content in the changelog may not fully meet current accessibility standards. New content is created with accessibility as a requirement.

Compatibility

This website is designed to be compatible with the following assistive technologies:

Screen readers (including NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, and TalkBack)

Speech recognition software
Operating system accessibility features including high contrast modes

The site is built with standard HTML, CSS, and minimal JavaScript, and is tested in current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
